The Swiss company Interglass Technology Ltd. has developed a new technology for the production of progressive lenses. The revolutionary advantages: The new system can produce high-quality plastic lenses much faster, more cost effective and extremely resource-efficient.
With our technology we directly cast the lense into the final correction. Thus we require significantly less material compared to conventional production.
Our production requires a fraction of energy. Conventionally, a spectacle lens is cured in about 50 hours at> 100 ° C - we need for just 10 seconds.
As we pour the lenses and do not grind, we do not require water in the production process.
Based on plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition technology (PECVD), Interglass Technology has developed a highly efficient coating process for ophthalmic lenses. Its results are a superior scratch and abrasion resistance with low running costs.

While working at a low process temperature (max. 80° C) and with short cycle times, the process is environmental friendly due to the fact that there is no wet chemistry involved. With its plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition technology, Interglass Technology sets new standards. The IGT23 allows a precise index-matching to various mid- and high-index lens materials and excellent mechanical coating properties by adjustable gradient layers. Its fully automated coating process enables simple operation. The PECVD coatings show a superior thermal stability compared to dip coatings, also the IGT23 can be combined with antireflective coatings by commercially available equipment.
Our unique “Fusion Technology” enables us to encapsulate elements of any kind (diamonds, crystals, logos, gold plates, different optical films, etc.) into our lenses. This opens up path-breaking possibilities within different markets. Fusion Lenses are either for decorative or for functionality purpose and its Technology is unique.

After 12 years of intense research efforts, the company has achieved for the first time in history to introduce a fully automated lens casting process to the market. This outstanding technology allows films with functional structures or objects to be directly cast into the lens without being damaged or losing functionality.”
For years the market has been looking for ways to cast prescription lenses from resin in minutes. Many research groups have unsuccessfully tried to develop potential procedures into industrial applications in the past. In 2003 finally, all efforts came to a standstill and the opinion that lens casting was impossible became a doctrine since then.
The impossible has always held a certain attraction for ambitious engineers. It challenges and motivates to make the impossible possible. Hence in 2003, Dr. h. c. Karl Nicklaus decided to establish Interglass Technology AG (IGT) with the aim to succeed in developing a procedure to cast corrective lenses fully automated and by the minute. In order to construct a reliable automatic machine, IGT had to know, understand and solve all problems down to the last detail. After a diligent analysis of the complex challenges related to lens casting, IGT started to implement a comprehensive, interdisciplinary research and development program.
Gradually after a number of setbacks, first results could be achieved. Individual processing steps were effectively integrated into the overall process. The technology was continuously optimized and refined. IGT accomplished its major break-through nine years after setting out on its mission: IGT successfully developed a technology to cross-link (cure) resin within seconds and to control the associated thermal and mechanical effect as well as the homogeneity of the lens. This fast and gentle process stands in stark contrast to other casting procedures, which rely on thermal curing with high temperatures for up to 50 hours, and which continue to be used in the industry to this day.
Based on IGT’s casting and coating technology, new client needs have been identified and were repeatedly met by IGT: The impractical and time-consuming cleaning process could be eliminated and the scratch resistance of cast lenses was significantly improved. Finally, the increasing desire to integrate functional substrate into the lens could be fulfilled: IGT’s unique casting entails the possibility to cast colored, polarized, decorated or optically structured substrate into the lens. The procedure allows to control the thermal stress to which the substrate is exposed and thus to guarantee that the substrate itself and its functional parts are not damaged during the casting process. All required optical parameters of the cast substrate are entirely preserved.
Today, twelve years after setting out to make the impossible possible, IGT has successfully introduced a unique lens casting technology in the market far superior to traditional procedures in terms of degree of automatization, throughput time and process control. In particular with a regard to the up-and-coming smart glass technology, IGT offers a modern and solution-oriented technology.
